Agnes Wighton (the youngest of William Wighton and Margaret Finlay's children) was born on October 13, 1779 in Potento, Meigle. She was christened on November 12. Agnes married John Duff, April 30th, 1809 in Meigle. She would have been 29 years old at the time. Death data (from Angus Monument Inscriptions) suggest that John Duff was born around 1786 and was 23 years old. John was not born in Meigle, however I was unable to determine where he was born since there were about 40 possible John Duff births in Scotland around 1786. The seven years difference in their ages, and John's youth, suggest that Agnes may have been a widow at the time. It was not unusual for young men to marry widows since they would have some financial security (e.g., an established house). However, this possibility is very speculative. I found no earlier Agnes Wighton marriage in Meigle (or in any other parish) that might remotely be considered to be hers. Agnes and John Duff had five children - all born in Meigle. Agnes would have been 39 at the birth of her last child. At some point after the birth of their fifth child, the family moved to Kinnettles, about 6 miles to the east and just south of Glamis. There, John Duff died at the age of 49 in 1835. Agnes Wighton died at age 73 in 1851. The headstone made a reference to a daughter Margaret (their second child). As mentioned, Agnes Wighton and John Duff had five children (as shown in the table above.) I tried to follow the line from the children and had little success.
