Isobel's Children | None found |
Isobel, William Wighton and Margaret Finlay's second child, was born on May 4, 1764 in Potento, Meigle. The records do not actually name Margaret as Isobel's mother, but we may assume that to be the case. (None of the records for William's children had their mother indicated.) The minutes of Meigle's Kirk Session meetings showed that 12 shillings was received for the use of a mort cloth for the funeral of Isobel Wighton on May 6, 1764. This fee was lower than the usual 2.2.0 fee (two pounds, two shillings, zero pence Scots) since Meigle had a small mort cloth for children. As you probably know, the birth dates in the records of that time recorded baptism dates, not birth dates. Also, for your information, the Kirk Session minutes did not record that actual date of the funeral - they only noted the day the money was received and recorded. Also FYI, May 6, 1764 fell on a Sunday. Thus we know that Isobel was christened on a Friday and was buried some time on Friday, Saturday or early Sunday. Sadly, in Scotland's 18th century, up to half of all the children died before they were 10 years old. You may wish to read about the funerals that were common at the time. It's quite likely that funerals of infants were handled differently but I couldn't find any information on that specific topic.
