John's Children Impossible to determine if John was married, and if, so to whom.

John, William Wighton and Margaret Finlay's sixth child, was baptized on June 3, 1770 in Potento, Meigle. As with William's other children, there was no mention of Margaret in the records, but we can assume that she was indeed the mother.

I was unable to find any evidence that John lived past his infancy, married, or had children. There were no marriages involving a John Wighton in Meigle in the 1795-1805 time span. It's entirely likely that, if John had grown up to marrying age, he might have married outside of Meigle parish, but I have no way of knowing which parish he married in, and whom he might have married. There were 8 potential marriages.

  1. A John Weighton married Rose Clow, 1793 in Perth. The couple had no recorded children. John of Meigle would have been 23 which is, perhaps, a little young.

  2. A John Weighton married Isobell Duncan, 1793 in Perth. The couple had no recorded children. John of Meigle would have been 23 which is, perhaps, a little young.

  3. A John Wighton and Margaret Duncan had a daughter, Rachel in Newburgh (Fife) in 1795. There is no record of that Wighton/Duncan marriage, but given the daughter's birth year, such a marriage might have taken place in 1794 or earlier. (That would have made John of Meigle 24.) A Rachel Wighton married Adam Sturrock, 1819 in Dundee. If it was the Wighton/Duncan Rachel, she would have been 24 years old at marriage - a distinct possibility. There is no record of any Sturrock/Wighton children so I couldn't check for grandparent names.

  4. A John Wighton married Agnes Ireland in Dundee in 1797. The couple had two children in Dundee (Robert, 1799; Margaret, 1801) and two children in Auchtergaven, 9 miles northwest of Perth. Those children were Marjory (1803) and Ann (1806). There's also a possibility of a fifth child, Mary Weighton who married a Thomas Brown in Newtyle and had a daughter who they named Agnes IRELAND Brown. However, this Wighton/Ireland lineage is definitely not ours as Greg Wighton has traced his own line back to this John Wighton.

  5. A John Wighton married Janet Black in Dundee in 1798. John of Meigle would have been 28 at the time. There were no recorded children.

  6. A John Wighton married Charlotte Nicholl in Dundee in 1799. John of Meigle would have been 29. There were no recorded children.

  7. A John Wighton married Isabella Innes in Cupar (Fife) in 1802. John of Meigle would have been 32. Again - there were no recorded children.

  8. A John Weighton married Mary Sutherland in Perth in 1803. John of Meigle would have been 33. Again - no recorded children.

It's possible that some of the above couples emigrated which would explain why so many of them had no recorded children. It's also possible that John married, but did not register that marriage. It's also possible that John remained single and lived a long life. However, if so, I couldn't find him. There was no John Wighton in the 1841 or 1851 censuses that had an obvious connection to Meigle. Only one John Wighton with the appropriate age and birth year appeared in a death record post 1855. However, this John did not have a Thomas as a father.
