Wighton Families in Edinburgh
Edinburgh

The first Wighton to appear in the Edinburgh records was David Wichtoun who together with his wife Issobell Gemmill had three sons and two daughters between 1633 and 1646. Those children did not appear again in the records. Harry Wighton would show up next in the late 1600s, appearing in the records as Wighton, Wigtoun and Wighton. He and his wife had four daughters and the family name once again disappeared.

It wasn't until the 1770s before Wightons once again lived in Edinburgh. Although the family presence didn't grow over the years, it was relatively steady with about 4 births/marriages recorded every decade up to 1850.

The Meigle line of the Wightons appeared but fleetingly in Edinburgh. John Murray Wighton (Generation 6) stayed at Caledonian Terrace in Edinburgh before joining the Scottish Prison Service on October 16th,1882. Also, John's sister, Fanny, was attending Moray House Training College in Edinburgh where she was studying to become a teacher during this same period. Fanny had a friend Amy at the college, and she became acquainted with the entire Wighton family including Fanny's brother John. John Murray Wighton and Amy Louisa Hutcheon were married in Dalkeith near Edinburgh in 1885.
